Johnston Island - birds (1999)

I worked at johnston island from july 68 thru july 1969. I worked for Kentron on north island on the tracking radars. I snorkeled almost every day from one end of the atoll to the other, played golf, softball, sailed sunfish in the channel and ate prime rib at the o club. also watched movies at the outdoor theater. I was on Johnston from Jan 68 to Jan 69. In the radio shop below the control tower next to the movie theater. Snorkeled, sailed, oldies on the radio 12 to 3 every day.

This place makes me very intrigued and curious! It has a certain something. I was never there but I feel some fondness. Nice place. In the middle of the ocean, located so far. This is great!

Thanks for the photo. That big building is where Joint Task Force 8 was headquartered in 1967 when I was there for 3 months (TDY with the 25th Aerospace Defense Squadron based at Vandenberg AFB, CA). Immediately to the west of the location the photo was taken from was the "golf course" and, beyond it, the officer's housing and the "O" club.

This photo reminds me of the movie The Birds.

I think there must be something going on at Johnston Atoll, because satellite imagery shows it very brightly lit at night.
